Disrupting Bias:
Disproportionality in the
UK Education System
The experiences of ethnic minority children and young people in the UK education system, particularly black students, has been well documented. Recognition of racial disparities in school exclusion rates, academic underachievement and negative lived experiences has started to inform discussions around equality and diversity and increase general awareness.
This course aims to enhance awareness of unconscious bias within the context of racial disproportionality across UK society. The training is intended to increase understanding of this complex issue and explore strategies and techniques to reduce the potential for UB to adversely impact upon practice. Attendees will gain a greater understanding of the real-life social and emotional impact on individuals, families and communities as well as explore the capacity of the education system to evolve and adopt new anti-racist approaches which produce greater social justice and equality.
Course Content

To identify the definition of unconscious bias (UB)

Develop a clear understanding of the science and behaviour of UB

Support practitioners to identify their own UB and associated triggers and drivers

Develop strategies and practical steps towards better and bias-free decision-making processes

Explore the reasons for racial disproportionality within the education system

Identify anti-racist practice and approaches to tackle discrimination and promote equality in education.

Promote practical steps that individuals and organisations can use to implement and embed anti-racism approaches in the workplace.
